Why Atlanta

Georgia is my birthplace, and I know a bit about it, however it occurred to me that many of the readers of my hubs are not as familiar with the state as I am. So I decided to write this from that perspective. I hope to visit sights that I know well and see them through different eyes. So keep reading. Just a little background about Atlanta. Atlanta, the capital of Georgia, is the world headquarters of The Coca-Cola Company. Also, the Atlanta Airport is the world's busiest airport, with Delta Airlines having it's hub there, Delta has the largest Airline hub in the world. For more interesting facts about Atlanta, and Georgia itself, go over and read my hub, GEORGIA-IS-ON-MY-MIND. I will supply pictures of some Atlanta hot spots later. One more fact that might be interesting to some, the up and coming entertainment "mogul," Tyler Perry has a studio right in the heart of Atlanta, or rather it's in Atlanta proper. I do hope to visit and take photos of that one day, and when I'll edit the hub, and add them. Oh, just a side note, when I left Atlanta over 43 years ago, it was considered a "sleepy Southern town," now however, it's blossomed into a "Bustling Metropolis," with major entertainment appeal, which explains it's appeal to the world. Atlanta is much more than what I've listed here, and in later hubs I'll list even more interesting facts.

The sub title asked the question "Why Atlanta," well this will be my base for awhile, I'm actually staying with my mother for a time.

My First Days

Since so much has occurred, I'll recap the highlights. I arrived August 19, 20 days from the time I first left California. Even though I've been enjoying myself on the road, I'm happy to be sleeping in a familiar bed since the last real day in my house.

The biggest event that occurred was a very nice dinner after a refreshing spiritual meeting on the first Sunday after I arrived. I saw some old friends, and met new ones. My old friends from back home, (California), were Steve and Lauren. They, as many of my friends have, left California for, "greener pastures." So another familiar friend to visit on this journey. Lauren was one of my best friends, before she moved away, and when we visit with each other, it's as if we've never parted, we always take up where we left off. Anyway take a look at the pictures below, and just imagine what a good time we had. The food, and association was topnotch. Especially the association. I met some really nice people, that I want to keep in touch with. Lauren and Steve are among those rare people that are easy to warm to, and the type you always want as friends.

Our Family Gathering

In days gone by, when I'd come home for a visit I was treated to family dinner. However now that I'm staying awhile, I decided to do the family dinner. I had to show them that I could still cook, LOL, I think I did that. I made my famous black eyed pea stew, and my sweet cornbread, which my mother hates, but it turned out to be a hit among the other members of the family. I also made my famous sour cream pound cake. (Use the links herein to get the recipes, if you're interested). All in all it was a very pleasant evening, I even met a couple of new family members.

Miscellaneous Events

Juanita, my childhood friend of over 50 years did as we always do when I come home for a visit, we went to our familiar haunts. The old neighborhood, our favorite eatery, etc. This time however we visited her daughter, Shawna's new herbal shop, "Your Vitamin Lady," Herb Shop. Since I had to leave my herbs behind, this was right up my alley.

Your Vitamin Lady

A little pitch time here. If you're in or around Atlanta, please stop by and visit Juanita's daughter's vitamin shop. I pride myself on everything healthy, but I was given a lesson while in the shop. Shana the proprietor, really does know all things healthy. She has magnesium oil, something I never heard of before, anyway it is touted as a remedy for a multiplicity of ailments. I did use it, but not enough to testify as to it's effectiveness. You can also contact YourVitaminLady online.

I also met the author of African American History for Dummies, a book which I must purchase. I understand it can be purchased from Amazon.

So again if you're in the area, or not, contact YourVitaminLady, either through the shop, or online, you won't be disappointed.

Brenda

Another shameless plug here. My sister-in-law has done something most of us are doing these days, and that's taking a chance, and striking out on her own. That seems to be the new American way, working for ones self. I applaud her, as I've been a lifelong entrepreneur, so I support anyone that has or develops the same spirit. Check her out here at her site.

Side note

My dear sweet sister-in-law Brenda gave me a piece of good advice. She, knowing that I'm a yes person, said, "For once make it all about you, put yourself first." So that's what I'm attempting to do while in this present situation. It's hard but believe me I'm working at it. I guess you're wondering where that came from. Well today, I am having a bad day and I needed something to cheer me up, and I remembered that, and got a lift. Thanks Brenda!

Conclusion

I need to end this some place, so here is a good place. I have much more to report on, but I'm afraid no one's reading this anyway, so I'll begin again once I'm back in Atlanta. By the way I'm currently on So. California. Stay tuned, more to come.

I almost feel like one of the family now.

You did such a good job of taking us all along for the journey, and I feel at home with your family through the pictures you have included.

I too share a love for Atlanta. If you read my Atlanta tribute hub, you already know how much I adore the city, the culture and the food.

Also, I am so much into herbal medicine, I am thinking about going to naturopathic medicine school (me at 42, sheesh!).

I will make it a point to visit Your Vitamin Lady Herb shop on Auburn Avenue - I go there a lot anyway because I can never get enough of seeing the beautiful combined tombs of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King.

As you can probably already see..I think this is a marvelous hub. Voted Up from me. Good Job!

I'm enjoying following your trip and learning about your family and life-on-the-road. Glad you're back in the South.

I plan to try your black eye pea stew soon. It's a little cooler here in the South now and a good time for a pot of stew.

My husband tells me Southern cornbread should not be sweet, so I guess your mother is a true southerner. But I like it a little sweet.

fastfreta Hub Author 8 months ago

Hold on Jo, I'm presently back in California, for a bit. But I am heading back to Atl. soon. Please do try the stew, it is a hit where ever I serve it. Your husband is right, southern cornbread is not traditionally sweet. However, I changed my style of cornbread making when I came to California, so now mine is really sweet, and let me tell you it too is a hit where ever I serve it.

Hey thanks Jo for stopping. By the way this hub was pulled for a bit today, because of being "purely personal." Anyway I fixed it by giving a little detail about Atlanta, and now it's back. I must be careful, going forth.

I will not talk about the house since you already stated but I can't help but be 100% interested in your next move. Will keep an eye out for it. I know it has to be nice seeing the family though. I am sure whatever road you choose will lead you home Freta. Until then,
