I Lost My Home To Foreclosure
81My Former Home
Let Me Explain
Yes, I lost my home to foreclosure, but, before you raise the pity flag, or send me derogatory comments, please hear me out. I'd like to state for the record here, there's no one person to blame for this outcome, I'm not even accepting all the blame, it's just the times we're living in, and it's happening to so many, why not me. I digress, anyway this is not an entirely sad thing to me, because it's allowing me to do something that I've wanted to do for a long time. I've always had the wanderlust, so I actually plan to spend a year traveling the country, visiting family, and friends, or just seeing sights, and places, that I've always wanted to see. I could possibly travel abroad, if the occasion presents itself, we'll see. At this point however, I'm going to "ride the rails," as it were. In other words I intend to do my state to state hopping by Amtrak. I'll be coming to a city near you. I'm going to live a life of a vagabond for 1 year, because I have no permanent residence, (and not independently wealthy), at this point, nothing to tie me down. I do, however, plan to return to Southern California, because, I Love Southern California. I plan to use this adventure in a positive way, (I'll explain later). I also plan to chronicle it here on HubPages, Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube. So, keep on the lookout. The trip won't start immediately, I'm trying to put my "ducks" in order.
I will be out of the house by the first week in May. I have been planning this adventure since I found out that I would be losing my home. The reason I'm writing this now is because I wanted to be sure it was beyond hope, (the saving of my home), because I didn't want anyone to think that I was soliciting funds. I also didn't want suggestions on how to save it, because believe me, if there was a way I would have found it, so you see I've exhausted all avenues, up to this point. Nothing short of a miracle can save it now, and I'm not sure I would want it anyway. Because, at this point I'm so in love with my idea, and almost married to it, that I don't think I would want any changes.
Melancholy
Let me get a little melancholy here for a bit. I've lived in this home for 40 years 5 months. My ex-husband, and I converted a two bedroom, one bath home into a 5 bedroom, 4 bath home with our "own little hands." Over the years we remodeled a few times. Take a look at the pics, to see some of the last remodel, that I did a few years ago. All, but one, of our children were born while we lived in the home. The house has been affectionately known as "Sailor Inn," owing to the fact that it's been a temporary home to numerous, men, women, children, and whole families, needing a helping hand. This is one of the reasons I'm a little sad, (no more "Sailor Inn"). I operated a business for over 17 years from this location, employing over 50 people. Everyone that I called friend, (I never meet a stranger), who's ever lived anywhere close to me has broken bread here. So many memories. Okay, enough of that now.
A few pics of what I'm leaving behind

I, like a lot of other unfortunate ones got caught up in the real estate debacle. I honestly thought I could make my payments. I had a business, (I've always been an entrepreneur), that, at the time was doing okay. I actually had run the business from home for sometime, even traveling to other states, with plans for expansion, which were set to go. So, naturally I thought I could make the payments, (see my boutique below). I had savings, 401k, stocks, etc. so everything looked good. In one fell swoop it all went away, no one was buying new clothes, and who could blame them, they were in the midst of losing everything too. So after exhausting all of my "back-up," I landed here. I went through all of the recommended steps to salvage my home, modification, etc. Of course there's more, but this is the short of it.
Conclusion
I said before that I'm going to explain my complete plans for my travels. I'll do that in a future hub. So stay tuned.
Because I am a somewhat private person, this hub just might stay up or not, I'll see as I go along.
The real reason I'm writing this article is to chronicle the beginning of my new life. Please stay tuned for updates, and new hubs related to this subject.

Lovely home Fastfreta! Great attitude you have and this hub is a nice tribute to the life you leave for the new one beginning! Hope you enjoy your wanderlust and your new life!
I too am setting out on a new path this year , started in motion the end of March, with changes end of April and finally end of May when I begin a new direction slightly different from yours but one I am looking forward to...I will be watching and cheering from the sidelines...Enjoy the freedom!
OMG Freta...so sorry you have to go through this. I am in a similar situation, but am still able to make the mtg. payments at this time. I also have a small business which is not doing as well as it used to.
Looks like you have the right attitude...that is. making lemonade out of lemons. What else can you do, huh? short of breaking down in a heap of tears which never does anyone any good.
The best of luck to you. The traveling sounds like a great idea...I wish you all good things in the future.
Hi Freta, sorry to hear about this. In 2007 it happened to me too. It was also the house I grew up in. While there was more going on (a sister who was less than truthful) the banks just kept selling the loan and the end result was loosing the house. I'll tell you what Freta, it was exactly what I needed to do too. I just downsized and found out that while I missed the house I did not miss the work and $ involved with keeping it. I think your idea is fabulous, especially doing it by train. I'm gonna' be keeping in touch and if you get through Cincinnati let me know and we'll get together for lunch. It's going to be the best thing that could have happened, it'll make you live life. Keep writing! Peace!! Tom ***Leave this hub up, what happens is sometimes out of our control....
You are amazing. I know you will have an exciting journey and this will lead to something even better for you. You inspire me!
Tragically sadly too many Americans have gone through what you have. What really gets to me is the very banks that gladly took the government bailouts that President Bush & President Obama gave to them are the very ones that are quickest to foreclose! I know you aren't looking for sympathy but I am sorry. Eight years ago I sold my home just steps ahead of banks that kept changing rules, so you have my empathy.
Everything happens for a reason fastfreta. What matters is that its a brand new start for you! Maybe you will find a new home or a new love or 'some-thing' on your travels...
Looking forward to reading the new chapters in your life. New beginnings offer many possibilities...
I am so sorry to hear that you are losing your beautiful home. I just hope that the future holds a great adventure for you. If you ever find yourself in England you have a place to stay at my house.
This shouldn't have happened to decent folk like you. I mean that from the little glimpse I got through your writing in hub you a lovely person. The very fact tht you are able to turn it into something like shows the great person you are. I am very glad you are not walking out on us and will hear from you. I am also struggling at the moment like so many other people. Those big sh(o)ts have certainly something to answer for. One consoldation - they don't take with them. Take care and don't forget your Hubbers.
Freta - You are a living example of the American Spirit. God Bless and I'm looking forward to reading your adventures. Salute from an old soldier!
I'm sorry to hear of your situation, but I'm happy to know that you've decided to move on and see the country. Many prayers and blessings in your new endeavor.
Fast Freda-
I feel like you, sad because of the memories but excited at prospects of new adventures. I had a similar situation and was forced to move/downsize. It was not fun but I think you have the strength to move forward. You are an outgoing hard working woman with so much to offer, I think you will do fine and you are just entering another chapter of your life. You have the right attitude and I look forward to hearing about your new adventures along with with any heartache if you ever need to talk.
Best Wishes!
Kathy
Hi,
Thank you for sharing this one.I must say that I am really sorry but you do really have the correct attitude.
As one door closes, another opens.
I wish you all the best in whatever you do.
Take care
Eiddwen.
FastFreda, you read my relationship hub so you know I just walked away. I was happy to give the house to my husband and it was fabulous.
I like being footloose and fancy free. I can move anywhere; go when I please and I like it like that. I don't think I ever want to own another house.
You'll be fine. Keep us posted on your adventures.

Fabulous fastfreta - because for you this is a new adventure - where most would roll over and die and blame the world - you are on to new places, people, thoughts and ideas. I love the idea of traveling by Amtrak.
I'll be keeping up with your new adventures!
Always,
Carolyn
Freta, your positive outlook in the midst of such struggles is inspiring. I know you stay away from talking religion but I can see that God is with you. Am looking forward to the good...no, GREAT...report!
Voted up and awesome
Freta, I really admire your positive attitude..My thought about it is maybe it really is a blessing in disguise. Though, I'm sure you are devastated. I am excited for you and your new venture in life and am very impressed with your ability to take this trauma and turn it into something positive. I wish you all the best and I'll be waiting for updates! Good luck to you :)
Your attitude is wonderful fastfreta, you're an inspiration, truly. Like the others, I am sorry that you had to lose your house, but since it's not possible to have everything in life, it's such a wonderful thing that you are going to get something so very positive out of this loss. I will very much look forward to reading about your travels and adventures.
The best of wishes,
Linda.
Beautiful home, how sad it's no longer yours. Now, I think it is wonderful how you are turning a negative into an adventure. How exciting your new life will be. I have no doubts you will be back on top. The economy is kicking a lot of us in the butt. Good luck.
Hi Fastfreta, I know exactly how you feel. I'm glad you have a great attitude regarding this unfortunate event, because many people have gone down the wrong track. It's happening in Australia as many homes are so overpriced. Keep up your positive attitude.
FF, you know, I thought about saying "I'm so sorry" as I read your troubles, for it truly sucks to go through it. Instead, let me raise a glass and say "To your journey!"
This economy has hit so many people hard - us too. We lost both our businesses. It took a couple of years of fretting, worry, and talking to figure out what to do. Like you, we ended up embracing the change and running with it. We set off on a different path and are happier than ever. No regrets. It turned out to be the best thing that has happened to us. But boy did it ever hurt when we were going through it!
Looks as though you have come out the other side and will be grinning soon too! Best of luck to you!
I always believe that when one door closes another door to a brilliant future opens up... Best wishes to you and I am sure you will find the purpose for this change, as you journey along!
God bless you Freta. I too am without a home that I built. My was taken by an ex. I refuse to divide my house up.
It is a sign of the times. It does take money to make money. And now we see that it's all too risky. The labor and dreams we invest are shattered by whatever means.
But this America - doesn't protect and support its citizens. Enough said about that but - if you get to North Carolina - please allow me to take you out to eat at my favorite eatery - or I always have popcorn! God bless you dear Freta. I'll be waiting.
Thanks for sharing, Freta. You have an amazing outlook and I have no doubt you will land squarely on your feet. If you ride the rails up to SF, stop by the HubPages Headquarters! We'd love to see you again!
I definitely really meant it! Would love to see you again!
My friend, fastfreta. I am sorry to hear this. But I believe you'll get the new one. God never sleep, my friend. If you ask for it with deeply heart, I promise "he" will give you more than before. I hope the best for you. Thanks for share with us, maybe by sharing with others would decrease your burden. God bless you.
Prasetio:)
What a gorgeous, warm nuturing home you possessed. You are so special and talented, I am sure something amazing will happen to you.I know how it feels to lose a home--you're very brave to chronicle it on Hubpages.
You'll be just fine, Freda! You've lived in the south and can survive anything that comes along, if I know you like I think I do.
Life is an adventure, even when you think the saga is all but over. Life without adventure, and sometimes major change, would be boring indeed.
Best of luck and enjoy your new challenges!
Randy
FastFreta it pains me to hear about your troubles but am encouraged for you because I know when one door shuts another opens. You being the dynamic, strong, determined and warm person you are I don't doubt things will naturally fall into place for you. I plan to continue following you and smiling with you along your journey. Good luck, and if your travels bring you around the Keys shoot me an email. Dinner's on me :)
let the adventure begin..... looks like a beautiful house....
Oh fast freta, I do hate that you are losing your home, a home that held so many memories for you and that has been your mainstay for so many years. I do however appreciate your positive attitude. In this case, you are truly taking lemons and making lemonade. This is a new journey for you and with your positivity and "can-do" attitude - I know you are going to have a blast. I do hope your previous home will go to someone who will truly apppreciate it and care for it like you so obviously did. I can't wait to see what adventures you take in the near future.
Hi Fastfreta!
Well, in spite of your positive attitude and the fact that you seem to be looking forward to your new adventure, I can't help but feel sad that you're losing the home you've lived in for forty years. A shame you can't keep the house and go on your travels. Who knows, maybe a miracle will occur.
I look forward to hearing how you get along. I'll just go and see if I can find you on FB.
If your travels do call you over-seas, and you pay a visit to Cologne, be sure to call me up.
All the best, Camlo
Fastfreta, I know you say you've explored every avenue, but there must be something you can do.
The only thing that comes to my mind, is to rent the house out (or part of it (it looks quite big)) to cover the mortgage until your situation improves. What about renting it out while you're travelling? Who knows what can happen in a year?
fastfreta, I'd like to hear your story privately. There may be help knocking at your door right now. How long have you been in this strait? How long do you have before home goes to sale? It can be stopped! and you can stay! Learning a lot about people in trouble with their homes. God bless you to keep your home. With man it is impossible but with God all things are possible. Let Him work for you, you need to believe only that He will!
As you said, it's not any one entity's fault. It's the times we live in. You are not alone. It takes a while to adjust and accept, but you have a great spirit. It was beautiful to read that this hub is to commemorate your new life. The world is wide open to you now, good luck!
As I shed the tears, I also know what a strong person you are. What an eye opening hub.... Thanks for sharing. You can overcome anything...
So sorry you will be in my prayers.
Fastfreta!...It's only a test! Your home for over 40 years indeed beautiful! I enjoyed your backyard, great for entertaining.
I'm sure you will be blessed with another fabulous home! Follow Your Dreams~ Do what you want, keep writing and Happy Hubbing~
40 years!!!? That is a long time. The Sailor Inn. I like that.
Well, you certainly have a good attitude. Travel the country and let us know of your journeys. I am a vagabond myself, having lost my home to foreclosure. I can empathize with you, to be sure. Like you, my business went down first and took everything I owned with it, including my credit rating.
I look forward to reading about your adventures. God Bless!
fasfreta, with an attitude like yours, you'll do GREAT. I just love your spirit. So many are attached to material things.
Have fun - Live in the moment. You are blessed. Like the saying goes: when one door closes, God opens a window.
Peace be with you my friend!
Dear FastFreta, I too lost my home. But life goes on. I relocated to the south from Ohio and I actually take time now to smell the roses. All has not been easy but I am still alive and kicking. I am actually writing a book about it. So many people have gone through this. It makes you wonder. What is really going on? I joined the HUB family today and was browsing. You seem to be a wonderful spirit. What a get attitude. Keep the faith and keep it moving. I love to travel too.God bless you! You go girl!
Hi, FastFreta. I am so sorry for the loss of your home. Many can learn from your great attitude in how you are handling it. Please, if you decide to come through Denver, Colorado and/or eventually Chicago, let me know. My wife and I would love to meet you in person. Seriously!
Dear Fastfreta, keep the faith and stay in the moment. Know that you will be fine. Remember GOD does not give us more than we can handle. Think about your journey ahead. You are a fine and obvious brilliant woman reclaim your greatness. Did you hear about Iyanla Vanzant's story?- if not look her up. She was an Oprah protege that lost her money, TV show, daughter, building and home in the last few years. She recently wrote a book-it is another best seller. She was what inspired me to reach and NEVER give up.
I like your attitude, Fastfreta. I like how you "make lemonade out of lemons" so to speak. It's so wonderful that you found a way to see the light in this dark situation. Sometimes in life, tribulations are the gateway to happiness.
Enjoy your travels. Life is short, and we should embrace every minute of it. And it sounds like that's exactly what you're doing. Happy travels!
So sorry about you loosing your home, it seems everybody is feeling the pinch, I'm glad to see you are turning this into something positive. Hope you have a good time on your road trip
I'm so sorry you lost your home, but glad you are turning your adversity into an adventure. Great attitude. I hope you have a wonderful time. You deserve it.
fastfreda, I am glad I found this Hub. You inspire me on HubPages. Thanks for sharing your home with us. "Lose is Gain."
I look forward to your new life and adventures. Been hearing a lot of good things about South Carolina these days!
Sincerely,
Sima
Modification is such a crock. So many people trying to go into modification and all it does is lose them their home. It scares me with all the home forclosures we see everyday and the job loses. I don't know what these banks are thinking. Obama allowed $75 billion modification and the banks are taking the money and not giving the loans. Nothing is being done about it.
Beautiful home you had and your such a good decorator.
Don't worry about the people who are nasty to you about this, it will come back to bite them someday.
Good Hub. Your hub will make people feel like their not alone.
Hi Fastfreta:
Wow! Been there just did that a few months ago. This is the 1st page I've ever seen someone openly discuss the doldrums of experiencing this economy 1st hand like the rest of us! I am truly not alone in this! I wish you the best! Are you going to start another business?
I'm saddened to read about your circumstances; Matthew 6:33--Jehovah God's spirit will sustain you as long as we keep putting his righteousness above all other things. Enjoy traveling the world / States for now and please keep Jehovah, his organization and the friends close so as to give you needed strength. Love you much and will keep you in constant prayer.
Great hub.I appreciate your positive attitude.
Well done.
Fastfreta ... I am so sorry to hear of your lost treasures. I enjoyed looking at your great photos. You certainly have "the eye" for styling. I was downsized from my job of 31 years exactly 1.5 years ago. If I had to choose one song that signified that change, it would be a slight adjustment to the title song from the Aladdin movie, "A Whole New [Marvelous] World". I understand your resilience and applaud your attitude. Thank you for sharing your personal story; it will help many, many others. Looking forward to your updates and wishing you ... HAPPY TRAILS!
So sorry you lost your home but I'm glad you're getting to see the country. It's a tough time for many people. God bless you.
What can I add to all the cheering comments you've already received? Just that you're an inspiration to me and so many others. I'm like you. I've lost, picked myself up and am moving on. Right now I'm in South Florida. If you ever get here, give me a hail. I would love to meet you.
Hi Fasifreta, I am soory to hear that you are losing your home...I am now in foreclouser and tried every way to save my home but it is useless. I called my mortgage company and talked to lawyers and nothing. Oh well...hopeing to get out of this hell and starting all over again. My husband isnt on the note so just my credit will be hit . So renting will be easy afterwards. We went through a trial modifacation and after 4 ,onths got turned down and then they escroed my taxes 1000 dollars a month and now it is ompossible to pay my mortgage...cant believe my mortagae company would do that. They new we were struggling on our 2000 a month mortgage and now to add 1000 dollars to the equsion is obsurd.Good luck to you...
Thank you...so good to hear some great advise. You are a good person helping others. It is so hard to find people who unederstand and not judge you...thanks again and have a great day!
I am 49 years old..a daughter in college and a son a junior in high school.
It has been difficult trying to except that we are losing this home but I have to make myself understand that it was never my home. We alwyas had a mortgage on it and they really owned it and had a say about it. I hate stuggleing making ends meet every month and now with the escrowed accound tagging $1000 extra a month is is impossible to pay. My husband is not doing well moving forward with this and so not only do I have to go through this on my own I have a sick husband to tend to and 2 kids trying to makie their live as normal as possible.
I am really ok with moving forward and starting a new life in a home that most likely we will rent. And that will be much much cheaper where we can save money and go on vacations and enjoy the good life. And getting rid of a lot o stuff/junk when we move will be another plus. Its good to talk to you and no you uderstand my worries...thanks again!
You Are an inspiration, Enjoy your journey and I'll be keeping in touch I see why you are near 100,000 views.
Take Care
Freta, I am reading your whole story backwards, following you on your travels. You have really made something special out of your troubles and offer a lot of us, those in trouble, and those not, real hope. Your story has the makings of a good book God bless you.
GoGranny 1 minute ago
Hi Fastfreta!! Long time since we connected! I was surfing for info about foreclosures and there I found your article on our own Hubpages. I, too, am losing my home to foreclosure due to a hefty wage cut. Did everything I could think of an even desperate enough to try one of those miracle lawyers - which was just a scam - more money down the drain! By the time we were able to rebound our income it was too late, the mortgage company would not hear of it! Sheriff sale is two days away and I have been so depressed that I haven't been able to feel motivated to write or do much of anything for months. Now I read your story and do feel uplifted a bit. I am looking forward to making this change now and thank God I was able to secure a rental. It was hard because of the credit checks...how can people with a foreclosure on their record have anything but bad credit!? I had faith that God would not leave me homeless. I am counting my blessings as I say goodbye to my home. Thanks for sharing so candidly!
Didn't quite understand your financial planning, how come you didn't pay it off in 40 years and losing it after 40 yrs doesn't make any sense to me. Also you bought it as a 2 Bedroom 1 Bath house and 40 yrs ago, that shouldn't have cost you a lot.

Just curious... you lived in your house for 40 years and didn't pay it off?
