How Is Coffee Good For You?

My coffee experience
Coffee....... good for you? Well, I've heard recently, that it actually is good for you. I just read an article, among many, on the website, AARP.org, that was a real eye opener. I was elated to read it, because it validates the fact that my coffee drinking habit is okay. So, what is coffee good for? We'll get to that later.
Let me tell you about my coffee habit, and how it began. It reminds me of the movie..........The Days of Wine and Roses, with Lee Remick and Jack Lemmon. I'll tell you why in a moment. I met my husband when I was 16 years old, and he was 19. When he would come to visit me, he always asked for a cup of coffee, or two, no matter what time it was. It was usually evening, he said that it never prevented him from sleeping. He would encourage me to have a cup with him, but I never liked "the stuff." That late night habit eventially proved to be a source his later insomnia.
Remembering the movie, (if you do), anyway, can you see it unfolding now? Well, as time went on, the coffee started to smell kinda good, so, I would taste a little, every once in a while. Now, remember, he used to visit me at night, so that kept me up late, and the next morning I was no good for anything. Thus began my reliance on coffee. Remember, Lee Remick didn't like alcohol, and Jack Lemmon drank all the time. See the connection. Well anyway, I started drinking coffee on the regular, and I've been drinking it ever since. To real coffee drinkers, pardon me, I have to have mine with cream and sugar, fake creamer, but real sugar. I digress. I attempted to quit, a few times, but I always went right back, now I'm glad that I did. Well, the end of the movie is......Jack Lemmon beat his addiction, but Lee Remick just couldn't. She said that the world was just too dark, (words to that effect), without the alcohol. Well my story is not that dramatic, however, my ex-husband has completely broken his coffee addition. Like Lee Remick. I, on the other hand cannot break my addiction to caffeine, (the world is just too dark without it), okay, okay, it's not that serious, LOL. But, anyway, with the news that's just coming out, who needs to break free. As a matter of fact , I might even increase my cups, by at least one, now take that Jack Lemmon, and You know who.

The research and findings
From what I see, coffee has a virtual treasure trove of healing, and preventative properties. Get this, "regular coffee consumption," could, possibly, reduce the risks of things such as suicide, mood disorders, certain types of cancers, type 2 diabetes, gallstones, cavities, Parkinson's, and much more. These things are all new to me, not that I've ever done research, but I read a lot, and most of these things I've never read.
I have always used coffee for headaches, a pick me up, a diuretic, and an appetite suppressant. About 10, or more years ago I found out about coffee's effects on asthma. Two cups of black coffee is used, in some cases, as an emergency treatment for an asthma attack. I used that with one of my children, it worked, I didn't even have to take him to the doctor after that. Of course, my son didn't have a very serious case of asthma. To be sure I am not recommending this to parents of children with asthma, or even adults with asthma. I'm just saying that I read, and tried it myself.
I read that, coffee is also thought to lower the risk of stroke, and endometrial cancer. It also seems to aid in pain relief after exercise. Something else that I just read in Woman's World magazine, concerning weight loss, to increase metabolism, drink a cup about half hour before breakfast. The jury is still out on that one for me, but I am trying it. Just call me Mikey, I'll try anything.
Other statements that encouraged me about coffee, is that, with it's numerous antioxidants, it helps reduce inflammation, and protects the inner lining of blood vessels, also being rich in magnesium, it is important in heart health. Speaking of heart health, another statement that I read somewhere, is that, women who drank more than six cups of coffee a day were found to have a 17 percent lower risk of dying from heart disease, cancer, and other illnesses compared with those who drank less than one cup a day. I'm sure that statement will reassure some that are really heavy consumers. That being said, I'm not drinking that much, I'm going to stick with my two to three cups a day.
I know there are more health facts associated with coffee consumption, but I haven't done extensive research on the subject to go into too much more detail. Suffice it to say, the bad rap that coffee has been saddled with all these years is beginning to be lifted. I, for one,am very glad about that, although it didn't take all of this research to convince me, but it is reassuring, and helps bolster me in my defense of my coffee drinking habit.
One of the places that I found some of this information, is in AARP Bulletin today at AARP.org, under the article entitled: The Coffee Brew-haha, dated May 22, 2009. I highly recommend reading this article, because, it has more detailed information.
Conclusion
So coffee drinkers unite, we now have good ammunition to add to our arsenal of defense for our coffee drinking habit. HEALTHY! HEALTHY! HEALTHY!

As a former coffee drinker, I too enjoyed this article. I was once addicted to coffee as well but broke the habit and am a newly rehabilitated former addict. Anyhow, I do appreciate this article and now won't feel so bad if I have a cup or two, once in a while. I enjoy your hubs very much fastfreta!!
As a coffee addict-Great hub!on the subject fast fretta-I love the feeling of alertness after a cup of coffee-but its the cofee withdrawal symptons that I hate most:-! and not being able to fall asleep:-)
Best thing about coffee that I love,is the smell-the only thing that beats the smell of freshly brewed coffee...mmm is freshly baked muffins...mmm...think it's time for a coffe break;-)
You did make the article very clear as to your resources. Nothing in question here and much appreciated information, as well as personal tidbits.
Great news! But don't forget that coffee is a de-hydrator. For every cup of coffee, you have to drink two cups of water to get back on even terms. Milk is a better re-hydrator that water btw (weird I know).
I used to have coffee at night as well, but after finding it hard to get to sleep for a while, have given it up at night and gone for a hot Milo/Horlicks combination (don't think you get that in USA).
I like coffee, it does not like me.
I so, so, want to believe all these positive things about coffee - and I think, in view of the fact that I'm a habitual coffee-drinker, I will. :) (All I know is it sure makes me feel great. :) )
Lovely hub, Fastfreta. I really enjoyed it. I LOVE coffee...all kinds. I drink mine black mostly, have since I was 13 or so. I do love iced coffee, hot and iced lattes, and my favorite is Starbucks caramel machiatto latte. Thanks for all the info...good to know it's actually a healthy habit. I'm going to get a cup now and read some more of your hubs.
I drink my coffee every day. Coffee cures most of what ails me. :) Thanks for a great supportive post for those of us who are coffee addicts.
Loved the post.
Fastfreta, I have to say that coffee like chocolate have not been given the respect they deserve. Top of food chain with bells and lights.
Who is talking about addiction here? I remember having to have surgery but before it I had to spend a few days on IV's only no food, that was not a big problem, the only thing was no coffee, I begged them to just put a little of it in the IV. Did they listen?
Thanks for a great post
that actually doesn't sound fun, coffee in an IV that is, i like to taste just how jacked i'm about to get. Hello my name is hienergybrain and i've been addicted to coffee since i was 12 which leads me to banishing another bad rap given to coffee, i am 5'6.5" making me taller than both my parents so it DOESN'T stunt your growth hallahluah!!
I am sure coffee like most things can be good for you in moderation. But too many do not take anything in moderation anymore.
I love a nice cup of Coffee anytime. I use to be a Coffee Addict and use to have around 30 cups of coffee in a day, thanks to the numerous clients who comes to me at Work. Whenever someone comes i also use to have coffee with them for giving company. When I felt that i am getting too much addicted to coffee i left it completely. Now I take only 2-3 cups in a week.
I am a former caffeine addict and I use the term caffeine because I also used to drink Red Bull and other energy drinks with caffeine as well as coffee. I quit it all about two years back because I had read it raises blood pressure and I was worried about that. Having said that, I very much believe that we are all individual and what works for one may not for another. This is a very informative hub and I'm pleased to hear it works for you!
does coffee contain caffeine? but many research said that coffee is good for healthy. I drink coffee for occasionally. but I like capuccino very much . thanks for share about coffee.
This is not good, I stopped drinking coffee a few months ago thinking I was doing the healthy thing, now you are telling me it’s good for you! I tried to have a cup of coffee again yesterday (my earl grey was finished) and I hated it. I can’t stand the taste of coffee anymore and I use to be addicted to the stuff (drinking about 6 - 8 cups daily) I think the sugar is the thing that is actually bad for you...hey?!
Anyways thanks for the great read!
I drink coffee only in winters. I prefer Tea. Yes coffee and tea have some advantages but excess of everything is bad. A hub on "benefits of Milk" is also a good idea. But overall your hub is very nice and interesting.
Mmm coffee. Delicious. At one point I was drinking 6-7 cups double strength coffee a morning at work or I felt like I'd fall asleep where I stood. Talk about caffiene addiction! I've heard both positive & negative health effects, but it deffinately sounds like the good outweighs the bad. So drink on! ;)
Hi fastfreta - I am linking this hub right now!
Very interesting hub.
I never knew that coffee had so many health benefits.
Even here on HubPages there are many arguments for and against coffee, but I think I like your approach better than most! LOL
Could be because I LOVE my coffee!
Thanks for bringing me my morning smile this morning as I sip on a fresh brew!
MMMMMM.... coffee... Now expound on the benefits of dark chocolate, and you'll keep me following forever. :)
Thanks for your hub!.
I like coffee but limit myself to 1 a day.
I am wondering where i read that it wasnt good for you.
Maybe that was in large quantities.
This is good news about coffee. So many of us require that daily cup, so it is good to know that we are not doing too much damage to ourselves.
good morning Fasfreta, 06:30 a.m in Indonesia.
I like tea than coffee, but I drink coffee occasionally. I add creamer into the coffee and I don't really like black coffee ( original taste). thanks
This is great news! I probably do drink six cups of coffee per day, but I hope AARP is not recommending that to seniors! Sounds like an invitation to a heart attack. On the other hand, my grandma use to spend all day in bed, so maybe some coffee would have helped.
I saw that picture at the top of this hub and took a time out to make some coffee...Mmm mm drinking it right now! You know, I remember when hamburgers were deemed a health hazard and they changed their opinion on that. Must have been due to the cattle ranchers outrage. I drink two cups of coffee a day for the most part, reg. in the morning and decafe at night. Love it.
Hello.... i drink coffee myself good stuff.... :)
i didn't know that it was good for you!!!! wow interesting... well i knew that it was good tasting but i didn't know that it was good FOR you... great hub!!!!!
Wow that is the exact reason that i drank coffee.... for the taste... like you said now i have a reason to drink it... oh! by the way thank you so much for taking the time to read my hub!!!! i really appreciate it!!!
great article!
Thanks for Informative hub... I like it....
Mmm I love coffee. It is a ritual in my house...first thing in the morning...freshly ground and brewed. First thing I come in from work and usually after a meal. Mostly dark...but sometimes with sugar and if it is really strong, then creamer is good. Let's hope all that research holds water so I can enjoy all the other cups I have "in between"! Enjoyed this Hub!
I love and drink a cup of cofee everyday for 7 years. i use to suffer with back pain. No more back pain.

I am not sure about all of the info. I am sure however I appreciate this hub, the cup of coffee I had with it and I know it got my neice through many an asthma episode.
You stated it correctly that to help with asthma it has to be black, no yummies added. Thanks for an informative as well as enjoyable hub!
